World War I veteran Edward "Ted" Francis remembers his experience as a volunteer infantryman in one of England's "Pals Battalions" during the Great War. Francis and his brother were among the lucky few who survived macabre conditions in the trenches of the Western Front. In this interview, Francis vividly recounts the misguided Army leadership that led to the Battle of the Somme catastrophe and the harrowing shell shock that ensued. Although he felt lucky to have survived, Francis was haunted by the loss of his dear Pals Battalion friends throughout his life.
