After a year and a half at Washington and Lee University, Dick Duchossois was called into service at the age of nineteen as a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve. Assigned to the 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion, he served in five European campaigns, attaining the rank of major. He received two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart, leaving the hospital without authorization in order to rejoin his unit at the front. He later became a successful businessman and horse racing executive. Here, he discusses his upbringing in Chicago, his stateside training, the "tank destroyer unit" concept, his numerous combat actions, the "skip ricochet" firing tactic, his experiences fighting German tanks (including the famed Tiger), his thoughts on leadership, his wounding and recovery, the liberation of a concentration camp, occupation duty after the war ended, and his career in manufacturing and horse racing.
